We are excited to finally have our center up and running in QH!!! It has been an exciting week as we see God continuing to break open new doors. This week we also started getting daily donations from a local bakery. If it was not for the center it would have been impossible to manage!! So now we are feeding breakfast in the mornings and the kids can come after school for a snack!!

]]><![CDATA[Feeding the Children]]>Tue, 06 Aug 2013 12:08:45 GMThttps://www.missionthando.com/blog/feeding-the-childrenWe often hear the expression, "Give someone a fish and feed him for a day. Teach someone to fish and feed them for a lifetime." When it somes to children our focus has been getting kids to school. This, we believe is teaching them to fish. Part of the struggle kids living in extreme poverty face is going to school and trying to learn while their stomach screams at them in hunger. By providing children with a nutritional porridge on their way to school we are helping them to be able to focus better in school. The nutrients provided in the porridge also helps them to fight sickness and in some cases either helps to fight the HIV virus in the body or help the child to take the ARV's needed to prevent HIV from becoming AIDS.
It may seem like a simple bowl of porridge but for many this is a lifeline. Each day we feed kids porridge on their way to school. It is a simple but tasty meal. The dry porridge is simply mixed with warm water and the kids stir it. We have two local volunteers who serve the porridge each morning from a home in the community. The cost of this porridge is aproximately $25.00 for a 10kg bag which gives us about 144 servings. We are currently using about 1 bag a day.
The idea is simple. If we can help these kids to complete their education then they have a much better chance of future employment. Currently in the community the majority of adults have not completed their grade 12. We hope to help make that change with the next generation.
